What is a 'Wind-window'?? A 'wind window' can be described as a very large bowl, facing the flier (while the flier has their back to the wind), weaker at the edges, stronger in the center, defined by the wind speed, direction and line length. A kite will 'fly' inside this 'window', given the characteristics of the kite, line and skill of the flyer.
A wind window cannot be seen, but exists with the wind at the fliers back. Without wind, kites don't fly. Walking or running sometimes generates enough wind for a kite to fly.
What!? is a Quad?? A quad line kite has 4 control lines. These lines are attached at the bridle (at the kite) on one end, and at the control handles at the other end. By moving the handles, flight, turning, spins, and stopping (while flying through the air.)
Revolution is possibly the first 'quad' line kite that comes to mind. However, other Quad kites, in many types, sizes and shapes are available! The TCUltra (Delta shaped, but has BOTH a Duel or Quad flying configurations) and the Lomax (delta shaped quad only), not to mention traction kites are generally four lines as well.
I've heard of a leading edge.. what is it? A leading edge (of a Revolution type Quad) is the long straight edge, of the kite. When a quad line kite flies.. the leading edge cuts/moves through the wind first. With a Delta shaped (triangle shaped) it has two leading edges).
How to fly a Quad... 4 basic things to know (launch/forward flight, turning and spins, reverse-brakes, landing)
Detailed -how-to- (flying) instructions photos coming soon! (with photo's to help illustrate the details)
First flight 'todo': launch, go to top of wind window, turn a little left, turn a little right, experience -gentle backward flight town the ground and gently land. (basically getting the feel for the kite.)
Second flight 'todo': launch, go to top of wind window, spin right (a spin is a 'held' turn), back to top of wind window, and spin left. If several spins are accomplished in the same direction, spin the same amount in the opposite direction.
Now that we know how to 'move the kite' around the sky, we can do regular figures, circles, squares and figure 8's.
Revolution has a REALLY nice Advanced techniques (including the how-to's!) available on their web site.
For more challenging Figures, check out the Stack Precision Quad figures, sometimes referred to as 'compulsaries'. (use the Quad symbol to display the list of 12 quad figures.) There will be pictures, defining the figure, and worded descriptions in the printed version.
ANIMATIONS! Stack figures, Quad indiviual and Quad pairs (plus!). WAY excellent! Requires shockwave 'flash', only 178k VERY quick to download, Plugin-tester and link included at this site. Roy Reed created these EXCELLENT animations! Also, Wind window with percents illustrated!
